Acts
1:8
8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in
Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
One of the most asked
questions about Acts is “Why does it end like it does?” This is because it
seems to have no real ending, there are a number of questions that remain
unanswered. But a close look at Acts 1:8
shows this is not so.
It is most often stated
the text above is the outline of Acts and that seems well supported. But it is also the purpose of Acts.
It is stated what Jesus
intends for His disciples to do. They
are to be agents for the spread of this witness of His death and resurrection
in a particular fashion, beginning with Jerusalem and extending from there to
the Gentile world. And this is exactly
what we see in Acts.
This is not the Acts of
the Apostles, or the Acts of Paul, but it is the inspired account of the spread
of the Gospel of Christ to the nations.
And by this the introduction of Christ’s Church in the world and not
confined to Israel. Acts ends in
Rome. The world is open.
Luke ends here. His job per 1:8 is finished.
