From Proverbs 29
Proverbs
29:1
He who is often reproved,
yet stiffens his neck,
will suddenly be broken beyond healing.
will suddenly be broken beyond healing.
This verse is a revealing look at perversity in human conduct. Please
notice:
A.
There are at least some and probably many who have
adequate warnings against their bad conduct.
B.
Scripture, laws, and discipline commonly received
qualify as reproofs.
C.
Out of those being reproved there are some who are
"often reproved".
D.
There are those being reproved who are aware of the
reproof and intentionally disregard it.
E.
Most bad conduct is intentional and does not have
ignorance as an excuse.
Note: Law
enforcement people I have known, prison guards, sheriffs, policeman, Border Patrol, and DEA scorn ignorance as an excuse.
I was a chaplain on Death Row in Texas and I met no innocent, ignorant convicts.
There were two mentally incompetent inmates to my knowledge.
F. The destruction of the
bad actor is always unexpected. It is sudden.
G. His destruction at some
point will be thorough.
H. The destruction of the
wicked is inevitable. Illustration: Captain Call in Lonesome
Dove, “I can't pursue him but he will die. A snake will bite him, a horse will
throw him, or someone will kill him.”
