Bill Fitzhenry's Thoughts For Today…
“This Book of Proverbs is so called, because it consists of wise and weighty sentences: regulating the morals of men: and directing them to wisdom and virtue. And these sentences are also called PARABLES, because great truths are often couched in them under certain figures and similitudes.” quote
Proverbs 4:18-19
18 But the path of the just is like the shining sun,
That shines ever brighter unto the perfect day.
19 The way of the wicked is like darkness;
They do not know what makes them stumble.
The statement in verses 18-19 is one of the most important Biblical principles in Proverbs. It is a full and factual statement of the diametrically opposed two ways
In verse 18 the way of the righteous has a beginning compared to the dawn. In the New Testament this is compared to the early childhood we experience. But this is only the beginning. There is progress to a fully developed day. They who are progressing from darkness to full day are called the Righteous. They are internally righteous and externally upright. Their uprightness has a single standard – the holy law of God. The knowledge of the righteousness of God in His law and a growing love of it increases in them and in the plain path they are to choose.
The greatest disservice the modern-day church has done is removing the knowledge of the law from her members. The commentary in the Westminster Larger Catechism on the Ten Commandments should be the curriculum for both children and adults. In this great commentary one can learn the true breadth and depth of God’s law. It is the full commitment to love God supremely and our neighbor as ourselves.
